Full-Sampling Focal Plane Arrays

The eeciency of single dish mapping and synthesis array mosaicing can be increased by completely sampling the information in the antenna's focal plane. This requires a densely packed array of electrically small elements. Each telescope beam is formed with a weighted combination of signals from seven or more elements. This has the added advantage of correcting for large scale reeector distortion...

Random Sampling of Plane Partitions

This article presents uniform random generators of plane partitions according to the size (the number of cubes in the 3D interpretation). Combining a bijection of Pak with the method of Boltzmann sampling, we obtain random samplers that are slightly superlinear: the complexity is O(n(lnn)3) in approximate-size sampling and O(n4/3) in exact-size sampling (under a real-arithmetic computation mode...

kth Nearest Neighbor Sampling in the Plane

Let B be a square region in the plane. We give an efficient algorithm that takes a set P of n points from B, and produces a set M ⊂ B with the property that the distance to the second nearest point in M approximates the distance to the kth nearest point of P . That is, there are constants α, β ∈ R such that for all x ∈ B, we have αdP,k(x) ≤ dM,2(x) ≤ βdP,k(x), where dM,2 and dP,k denote the sec...

Tightness problems in the plane

A 3-uniform hypergraph is called tight if for any 3-coloring of its vertex set a heterochromatic edge can be found. In this paper we study tightness of 3-graphs with vertex set IR and edge sets arising from simple geometrical considerations. Basically we show that sets of triangles with \fat shadows" are tight and also that some interesting sets of triangles with \thin shadows" are tight.

Radon-in-Water Sampling Problems

Numerous past studies of waterborne radon sampling and measurement techniques have concluded that today's most frequently used sample collection methods are cumbersome and/or require highly trained and careful technicians. All are prone to error if there is the slightest deviation from the prescribed procedure. Obtaining reasonable accuracy and precision requires a high skill level on the part ...
